The ability to work with the legal team, oversee the drafting of contracts and ensure that all legal aspects are considered in the company's activities.

Core Legal Competencies

Level 1

Is able to draft basic contracts, can assist with work on more complex matters.

  • Reviewing & drafting legal agreements: You can assist in drafting basic legal agreements.

  • Internal legal processes: You have a basic knowledge of the company's legal requirements.

  • Communicating complex principles: You understand the principles of the law, but does not have a deep understanding of how those principles apply to a given case. You understand the need to communicate in the language of those you're communicating with.

Level 2

Is able to draft complex contracts, assists on all aspects of legal work.

  • Reviewing & drafting legal agreements: You can draft basic legal agreements with limited guidance.

  • Internal legal processes: You are able to advise on basic legal topics with a high degree of accuracy, and can provide additional information upon request.

  • Communicating complex principles: You understand the principles of the law and how those principles apply to a given case. You communicate those principles in a clear and concise manner.

Level 3

Leads on drafting complex contracts, advises on how to best execute legal matters.

  • Reviewing & drafting legal agreements: You draft a wide range of agreements with minimal guidance, and can set out expectations for others in drafting more complex or less routine agreements.

  • Internal legal processes: You are able to advise on complex legal topics, and can provide additional information upon request.

  • Communicating complex principles: You understand the principles of the law, how those principles apply to a given case, and can articulate those principles clearly and concisely as part of a broader argument or as part of an explanation as to how they would approach a new case.

Level 4

Leads on all aspects of the team's work. Recommends best practices for the team.

  • Reviewing & drafting legal agreements: You draft complex agreements covering all aspects of the organisation's operations. You review work of junior legal colleagues.

  • Internal legal processes: You are an expert on the organisation's legal requirements and ensures that organisation documents are compliant within this.

  • Communicating complex principles: You have a deep understanding of the concepts that underpin the legal position of the organisation and can provide insightful commentary on legal developments. You can synthesize disparate legal concepts into coherent arguments, communicating with across all levels of the organisation.

Level 5

Leads on all aspects of the legal function for the company as well as mentoring junior colleagues.

  • Reviewing & drafting legal agreements: You are a recognised expert in the fields of drafting and reviewing legal agreements.

  • Internal legal processes: You lead the organisation in ensuring that its documents are compliant with all legal requirements, and is an expert on the company's legal requirements.

  • Communicating complex principles: You have an expert understanding of underlying legal concepts and an ability to articulate them clearly and concisely at various levels within the organisation, including board level.
