Level 1

Is able to read and follow financial statements and understand basic concepts of finance.

  • Financial modelling: You can create basic revenue models.

  • Insights: You understand the basics of financial analysis. You have a basic knowledge of relevant data and can use it to answer questions.

  • Results communication: You are able to comprehend the basics of financial reporting, but needs coaching on how to communicate this knowledge effectively.

Level 2

Understands the principles of budgeting and cash flow forecasting. Knows how to identify trends in financial statements.

  • Financial modelling: You are able to build complex, detailed financial models that are used across the business.

  • Insights: You have a solid understanding of data, can define the problem space and articulate analytical requirements. You can analyse this data to provide insights for decision making.

  • Results communication: You have a basic understanding of financial reporting and is able to convey that knowledge in a clear and accurate manner.

Level 3

Can forecast budgets and cash flow for one or more years, with a focus on risk mitigation. Can manage budgets for several people at the same time.

  • Financial modelling: You can use modelling techniques to solve complex problems, identify possible risks, and make recommendations for corrective actions.

  • Insights: You can demonstrate how to successfully translate analytical requirements into actionable solutions. You lead others in the team to deliver the best possible outcomes.

  • Results communication: You have a deep understanding of financial reporting, and are able to convey that knowledge in an understandable way, with the ability to translate complex ideas into simple language.

Level 4

Understands complex financial concepts, such as depreciation, leverage, liquidity ratio. Is able to lead teams in budgeting, forecasting, assessing risk to budget, and mitigating risk.

  • Financial modelling: You lead the team on modelling work. You can model risks across a wide variety of scenarios, and develop effective recommendations for management.

  • Insights: You are able to articulate customer behaviours and market trends. You lead the team in analysing customer needs, designing appropriate solutions, implementing them, measuring their success, then repeating the cycle.

  • Results communication: You lead the team in producing financial reports. You are able to work closely with senior stakeholders and translate their requirements into reporting requirements.

Level 5

Leads substantial organisations through significant financial changes. Is an expert on managing budgets across multiple years with a sophisticated understanding of the business's position in context of current economic conditions.

  • Financial modelling: You are a recognised expert on how to model finance across organisations, leading the development of best practice in financial modelling.

  • Insights: You lead the organisation in defining its future through insightful analysis of data and trends. You establish best practice models for decision making throughout the organisation.

  • Results communication: You are a widely trusted advisor on all aspects of financial planning & analysis. You lead the entire organisation on producing financial reports, ensuring they are accurate, relevant and at the highest standard.
