Integrated Design

The ability to understand layout, imagery, colour, typography and use them effectively in your everyday work. Familiarity with different mediums including digital and print.

Level 1

Has a good basic grasp of colour, layout and typography. Can produce solid designs based on smaller well defined briefs, with support.

  • Colour, Layout and Typography: You have shown an understanding of the principles of colour, layout and type through several simple projects.

  • Knowing your medium: You have demonstrated a general understanding of how to design for print and screens, including pixel densities, responsiveness and paper sizes.

  • History: You've referenced some designers and styles that you like and admire, and current trends, in your work.

  • Critique: You've spotted errors in your own work several times before others have. You've responded positively to critique.

Level 2

Has a good command of colour, typography and layout across multiple formats. Can handle difficult constraints and larger projects comfortably. Raises the quality of the team.

  • History: You've actively pulled on a good sense of how design trends have come to be, including the history of famous design schools, styles and eras, in several projects.

  • Critique: You've regularly spotted mistakes and opportunities for improvement in your own work, and are active in critique, giving constructive and useful feedback to others. You regularly share your work early for feedback.

  • Colour, Layout and Typography: You've demonstrated an ability with colour, type and layout across several projects in a variety of mediums and contexts.

  • Knowing your medium: You have demonstrated a good understanding of how to design for print and screen across several smaller projects.

Level 3

Has an exceptional command of colour, layout and typography. Can utilise different styles, grids and techniques to create unique and eye-catching work regardless of constraints. Supports others in their work.

  • History: You've regularly referenced design history including colour theory, gestalt principles and iconic styles, in several large projects.

  • Critique: You've regularly spotted mistakes and significant opportunities for improvement in your own work and the work of the team around you, which you handle constructively. You regularly share your work early for feedback.

  • Colour, Layout and Typography: You've raised the bar of the brand team's output through innovative and beautiful use of colour, type and layout across several major projects.

  • Knowing your medium: You have demonstrated an excellent understanding of how to design for print and screen across several large projects involving complex technical requirements.

Level 4

Leads the visual style of the brand, pushing quality, consistency and visual flair across the team. Formally supporting more junior members of the team, with demonstrable results.

  • Critique: You've organised better working practices for the team to improve quality overall. You encourage an open, constructive dialogue and encourage critique on your work as someone in a senior position.

  • Colour, Layout and Typography: You've been trusted with the most complex and high profile of design projects and proven your ability to produce design work of the highest quality. You're mentoring others in your team around design principles.

  • Knowing your medium: You have regularly both shown an excellent knowledge of both print and screen design in your own work, and mentored others on best practices for both.

Level 5

A renowned designer, bringing acclaim to the team and business through perfectly executed, innovative and exciting work across multiple touchpoints. Leading and inspiring others beyond the immediate team, earning trust across and outside the business.

  • Critique: You invite critique from the wider business wherever possible. You encourage non-designers and stakeholders into reviews to get their feedback, and encourage healthy feedback cycles throughout.

  • Colour, Layout and Typography: Your design work has won international awards for quality of execution. Internally all high profile work goes through you. You're assessing and raising the quality bar internally.

  • Knowing your medium: You're a world class practitioner on both print and screen, writing or speaking about best practices on either medium as well as actively upskilling others internally.
